幹壞事是進步最大的原動力
在 Hacker News 上看到「VMware Fusion Pro: Now available free for personal use (vmware.com)」這篇，VMware 公告開放 Fusion Pro 個人免費使用：「VMware Fusion Pro: Now Available Free for Personal Use」。
不過 VMware 前陣子搞了一波 (先前有寫「Broadcom 在併購 VMware 後裁員」與「Proxmox 的 VMware 轉移方案」兩篇)，已經有品牌信任度的問題了，逃的掉 + 想逃的人應該也都把替代方案研究的差不多 + 在執行了；而新的商業用戶應該也會考慮到品牌信任度的問題。
開放個人用戶免費使用比較像是重頭開始經營的感覺... 有點想到當初微軟在學校裡面用很低的價錢提供正版軟體 (Windows + Office)，培養學生使用習慣，等他們出社會後，市場上就有很多人可以用，反過來影響到雇主端的選擇。
Hacker News 上看到「Proxmox VE: Import Wizard for Migrating VMware ESXi VMs (proxmox.com)」這篇，原文在「New Import Wizard Available for Migrating VMware ESXi Based Virtual Machines」這邊。
算是有比較簡單的方式 (在這邊是提供 wizard) 可以把現有跑在 VMware 上面的 VM 轉出來，就不用自己在 command line 下 export (dump) & convert & import (restore)，光是把 storage 轉過去就弄半天，這對於不熟悉 CLI & script 的人方便不少。
話說二月時傳出 Broadcom 打算把買來的 VMware 的 C 端產品拆開來賣：「VMware's end-user compute unit reportedly headed to private equity firm KKR」，後續好像沒有看到新消息？不過 C 端目前的領頭者應該還是 VirtualBox？這樣看起來賣掉也不算太意外就是了...
Hacker News 上看到「Broadcom lays off many VMware employees after closing acquisition (businessinsider.com)」這篇，前幾天 Broadcom 買下 VMware 的消息才公告出來 (參考「Broadcom 買下 VMware」)，馬上就有裁員的消息了... 原始報導在「Broadcom lays off many VMware employees after closing its $69 billion acquisition of the company」，不過因為 paywall 的關係，可以看參考 archive.today 上面的頁面：「Broadcom lays off many VMware employees after closing its $69 billion acquisition of the company」。
報導裡面有提到，在併購前 VMware 自己就有在砍人了，不過併購完馬上就再砍，不太好看...
還是如同之前提到的，看不太懂這個併購案的目的，看起來只是單純往軟體產業投資？因為 VMware 跟先前併購的 CA Technologies 與 Symantec 好像是沒有太直接可以拼湊起來的感覺...
看到「Broadcom announces successful acquisition of VMware」這則公告，想要找 VMware 發的新聞稿但沒找到，反倒是 Broadcom 這邊還有一篇「Broadcom Completes Acquisition of VMware」。
不知道要說什麼... 有種當年 Intel 買下 McAfee 的感覺？到底會有什麼想法？
Hacker News 上的討論蠻有趣的：「VMware is now part of Broadcom (broadcom.com)」。

Archive Team 是一個致力於保存數位資料的組織，而 ArchiveTeam Warrior 則是他們提供的軟體，可以讓你很方便直接跑 worker 加入他們的 cluster，幫忙抓資料並且保存到 Internet Archive 上。
他們提供三種方法跑 ArchiveTeam Warrior，第一種是 VM 的方式，文件裡面有介紹怎麼用 VirtualBox 或是 VMware Player 跑起來。
第二種與第三種都是 container 類的方式，Docker 與 Podman 都能跑起來。
跑起來後可以連進 http://127.0.0.1:8001/，然後選擇想要加入的項目，或是接受指令選擇目前團隊主打的項目。
在「Projects」這頁可以看到目前主力是備份 Enjin 上的資料。
丟了兩台 VPS 的機器上去用 Docker 跑，CPU 使用率看起來很低，但網路流量看起來會因為所在的地點而差蠻多的，一台大約是 300KB/sec 到 400KB/sec，換算後大約是 1TB/mo，另外一台則只有 1/10 的量。
在 MariaDB 的「MyISAM and KPTI – Performance Implications From The Meltdown Fix」這篇看到頗驚人的數字，這篇提到了他們收到回報 (回報的 ticket 可以參考「[MDEV-15072] Massive performance impact after PTI fix - JIRA」)，說 KPTI (Meltdown Mitigation) 對 MyISAM 效能影響巨大：
Recently we had a report from a user who had seen a stunning 90% performance regression after upgrading his server to a Linux kernel with KPTI (kernel page-table isolation – a remedy for the Meltdown vulnerability).
他們發現 90% 是因為 VMware 舊版本無法使用 CPU feature 加速，在新版應該可以改善不少。但即使如此，文章內還是在實體機器上看到了 40% 的效能損失：
A big deal of those 90% was caused by running in an old version of VMware which doesn’t pass the PCID and INVPCID capabilities of the CPU to the guest. But I could reproduce a regression around 40% even on bare metal.
然後後面就在推銷 MariaDB 的 Aria Storage Engine 了，不是那麼重要... 不過知道 MyISAM 在 KPTI 下這麼傷還蠻重要的，因為接下來五年應該都還是愈的到 KPTI，應該還是有人在用 MyISAM...
首先是 VMware 發文打臉 Microsoft 說他們所宣稱的轉移工具 (從 VMware 轉到 Azure 上) 並沒有 VMware 原廠支援：「VMware – The Platform of Choice in the Cloud」。
然後 AWS 則是推出了從 Hyper-V 轉移到 AWS 的工具：「Migrate Hyper-V VMs to AWS with AWS Server Migration Service」，這邊倒是沒提到官方支援...
這臉不只是腫腫的而已了，有種連續技的感覺 XD
AWS 推出了「VMware Cloud on AWS」服務：「VMware Cloud on AWS – Now Available」。
由圖可以看出來 AWS 的架構與 VMware 其實是獨立的，只是在網路層上打通：
文字上可以看到更細的敘述，跟 AWS 的架構很不一樣：
This offering is sold, delivered, supported, and billed by VMware. It supports custom-sized VMs, runs any OS that is supported by VMware, and makes use of single-tenant bare-metal AWS infrastructure so that you can bring your Windows Server licenses to the cloud. Each SDDC (Software-Defined Data Center) consists of 4 to 16 instances, each with 36 cores, 512 GB of memory, and 15.2 TB of NVMe storage. Clusters currently run in a single AWS Availability Zone (AZ) with support in the works for clusters that span AZs. You can spin up an entire VMware SDDC in a couple of hours, and scale host capacity up and down in minutes.
網路層也不同，甚至支援 multicase：
The NSX networking platform (powered by the AWS Elastic Networking Adapter running at up to 25 Gbps) supports multicast traffic, separate networks for management and compute, and IPSec VPN tunnels to on-premises firewalls, routers, and so forth.
目前只有在 us-west-2 可以用：
This service is initially available in the US West (Oregon) region through VMware and members of the VMware Partner Network.
這樣感覺用 AWS Direct Connect 就可以解不少問題，這個合作的幫助不太大... XD
vSphere HTML5 Web Client 算是 VMware 對 HTML5 的嘗試，在 HTML5 技術夠彈性的情況下避開使用 Flash 技術的 Web Client。
就畫面上看起來還不錯... 基本的操作應該可以搞定了，之後應該有機會可以拿來玩看看 :o
VMware 宣佈 Windows 上用 C# 寫的 vSphere Client 退役，發表 HTML5 版本：「Goodbye vSphere Client for Windows (C#) – Hello HTML5」，畫面長這樣：
