GitLab 12.1 之後放棄支援 MySQL

GitLab 打算在 12.1 之後放掉 MySQL 的支援:「Why we're ending support for MySQL in 12.1」。

GitLab 在說明裡給了不少原因,但看了看以後還是覺得 GitLab 每次在做技術決策時給出來的理由都很... 有趣?XD

每次看這三家提供的技術工具或是技術決策都很有趣... (另外兩家是 UberYahoo!)

Ubuntu 改變放掉 i386 的計畫

先前在「Ubuntu 19.10 要放掉 i386 架構」這邊提到 Ubuntu 要放掉 i386 的計畫,因為造成的迴響很大,現在官方決定修改本來的結論:「Statement on 32-bit i386 packages for Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 LTS」。

在本來的計畫裡,是完全放生 i386 架構 (完全不管):

While this means we will not provide 32-bit builds of new upstream versions of libraries, there are a number of ways that 32-bit applications can continue to be made available to users of later Ubuntu releases, as detailed in [4]. We will be working to polish the 32-bit support story over the course of the 19.10 development cycle. To follow the evolution of this support, you can participate in the discourse thread at [5].

現在則是打算透過 container 技術支援 32-bit library & binary,算是某種緩衝方式:

We will also work with the WINE, Ubuntu Studio and gaming communities to use container technology to address the ultimate end of life of 32-bit libraries; it should stay possible to run old applications on newer versions of Ubuntu. Snaps and LXD enable us both to have complete 32-bit environments, and bundled libraries, to solve these issues in the long term.

但應該還是會有程式沒辦法在 container 環境裡跑,看起來官方決定放掉了...

Ubuntu 19.10 要放掉 i386 架構

Ubuntu 19.10 版將不再支援 i386 架構了:「i386 architecture will be dropped starting with eoan (Ubuntu 19.10)」。

查了一下 x86-64 條目,AMD 的第一個 x86-64 版本是在 2003 年四月推出的:

The first AMD64-based processor, the Opteron, was released in April 2003.

Intel 則是在 2004 年六月推出:

The first processor to implement Intel 64 was the multi-socket processor Xeon code-named Nocona in June 2004.

但是 mobile 版的是 2006 年七月:

The first Intel mobile processor implementing Intel 64 is the Merom version of the Core 2 processor, which was released on July 27, 2006.

不論如何都已經十年了,如果考慮到 Ubuntu 18.04 提供五年支援,其實到 2023 年四月前都還有得用...

AWS 的 OpenJDK 11 (Amazon Corretto 11) 推出 General Availability 版

先前在「AWS 決定花力氣支援 OpenJDK (Corretto 計畫)」與「Amazon 版的 OpenJDK 8 進入 GA」後的下一步,就是對 OpenJDK 11 也推出對應的 Amazon Corretto 11:「Amazon Corretto 11 is Now Generally Available」。

這個版本將至少支援到 2024 年 8 月,也就是五年的支援期:

Long-term support (LTS) for Corretto includes performance enhancements and security updates for Corretto 8 until at least June 2023 at no cost. Updates are planned to be released quarterly. Amazon will provide LTS for Corretto 11 with quarterly updates until at least August 2024.

不過先前有些軟體測試時發現 OpenJDK 11 上不能跑,這些軟體還是得暫時用 OpenJDK 8 的版本來養...

各種 Java 的版本

目前看起來如果要 Java 8 只有三個方案,其中有過 TCK 的只有兩個,看起來用 Amazon Corretto 算是個還不錯的選擇?

Twitch 用 VP9 直播...

Twitch 整理了一篇「How VP9 delivers value for Twitch’s esports live streaming」,說明他們用 VP9 的經驗談。

裡面有很大的篇幅是在講 VP9 與 H.264 的比較,不過這兩個用的技術就已經不是同一個年代了,沒有進步的話就不用出來玩了...

裡面有講到一些有趣的東西,像是提到是用 FPGA 即時壓縮:

In this article, we will show that the FPGA-based real-time VP9 encoding can deliver at least 25% bitrate savings compared to the highest-quality H.264 encoders deployed in Twitch’s production today.

然後提到 1080p60 至少省了 25% 的頻寬 (這邊應該是相較於 H.264):

查了一下,在桌機上的瀏覽器都差不多支援了:

VP9 is implemented in these web browsers:

Chromium and Google Chrome (usable by default since version 29 from May and August 2013, respectively),
Opera (since version 15 from July 2013),
Mozilla Firefox (since version 28 from March 2014),
Microsoft Edge (as of summer 2016).

行動裝置的話 Android 4.4+ 有支援,但在 iOS 上沒有支援...

整體看起來普及率算是不低,可以引入當主力 codec 降低頻寬成本,當設備不支援 VP9 時 (應該只有 iOS 透過 Safari 觀看的情況) 就用 H.264 stream 提供服務。

Cloudflare 同時支援 TLS 1.2 與 TLS 1.3 的過程

Cloudflare 算是很早就參與 TLS 1.3 發展的廠商。在參與過程中他們希望讓支援 TLS 1.3 draft 的瀏覽器可以開始使用 TLS 1.3 draft,但又不希望因為 draft 頻繁修改而導致本來的使用者受到影響,所以就找了方法讓兩者並存:「Know your SCM_RIGHTS」。

這個方法就是 SCM_RIGHTS,可以讓另外一個 process 存取自己的 file description。

You can use UNIX-domain sockets to pass file descriptors between applications, and like everything else in UNIX connections are files.

所以他們的作法就是先讀取 TLS 裡 Client Hello 的資料,如果裡面有看到想要使用 TLS 1.3 的訊息,就透過前面提到的 SCM_RIGHTS 丟進 Golang 寫的程式跑:

We let OpenSSL read the “Client Hello” message from an established TCP connection. If the “Client Hello” indicated TLS version 1.3, we would use SCM_RIGHTS to send it to the Go process. The Go process would in turn try to parse the rest of the “Client Hello”, if it were successful it would proceed with TLS 1.3 connection, and upon failure it would give the file descriptor back to OpenSSL, to handle regularly.

這樣本來的 stack 就只要修改一小段程式碼,將當時還很頻繁修改的 TLS 1.3 draft 丟到另外一個 process 跑,就比較不用擔心本來的 stack 會有狀況了。

AWS 決定花力氣支援 OpenJDK (Corretto 計畫)

AWS 推出了 Amazon Corretto (其中 Corretto 這個名字應該是取自 Caffè corretto,還是跟咖啡有關的字),提供 OpenJDK 的長期支援:「Introducing Amazon Corretto, a No-Cost Distribution of OpenJDK with Long-Term Support」。

文章裡提到了幾個重點,第一個是目前先推出了 Corretto 8 Preview (對應到 OpenJDK 8),而之後 GA 會推出 UbuntuRHEL 上的套件,另外也打算推出 Corretto 11 (對應到將來的 OpenJDK 11):

The Corretto 8 preview corresponding to OpenJDK 8 is available at this time for Amazon Linux 2, Microsoft Windows, and macOS platforms and Docker image. Preview builds can be downloaded by visiting aws.amazon.com/corretto. General Availability is planned for Q1 2019, and will also include Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise Linux platforms. Corretto 11 builds corresponding to Open JDK 11 on these platforms will follow with ample time for testing before April 2019.

再來是支援期都差不多是四~五年:

Amazon will distribute security updates to Corretto 8 at no cost until at least June, 2023, and to Corretto 11 until at least August, 2024.

這樣在又多了一些選擇...

Ubuntu 推出 14.04 的 ESM 計畫

Ubuntu 14.04LTS 版本,在明年四月底 (也就是 2019 年四月) 將會滿五年的維護期,之後就不會有任何公開更新了 (包括安全性更新)。

在前一次的 Ubuntu 12.04 是第一次提供 ESM (Extended Security Maintenance) 服務,讓沒辦法即時轉及到新版的單位可以付費繼續收到安全性更新,算是 LTS 的一個重要服務。

而官方這次也對 Ubuntu 14.04 推出了 ESM:「Announcing Extended Security Maintenance for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS – “Trusty Tahr”」。

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS – ESM will become available once Ubuntu 14.04 reaches its End of Life on April 30, 2019.

價錢應該會跟之前類似吧...
