幹壞事是進步最大的原動力
這個大家等好久了，尤其 MySQL 常遇到需要用記憶體換效能的情境：「Amazon RDS for MySQL and MariaDB Supports R4, T2 and M4 Instance Types」。
先前 t2 最大只能開到 t2.large (8GB RAM)，對於需要大量記憶體運算的 SQL query，就有機會被 MySQL 使用 filesort 寫到硬碟裡面暫存了。這次支援這些 instance type，開發環境至少有選擇可以開到 t2.2xlarge (32GB RAM) 跟他拼。
而 r4 應該是正式環境期待已久的 instance type 了。r3 最大是 r3.8xlarge (244GB)，跟 r4 最大的 r4.16xlarge (488GB) 剛好差了一倍。
m4 就比較微妙了，順便補上去的感覺... 不過應該還是會有應用會剛好用到。
不過還是期待前陣子出來的 c5，對於寫出很驚人的 SQL query，在 MySQL 內跑大量運算的應用會有幫助，就繼續等吧... :o
這次 Amazon EC2 主要降的是 Reserved Instances 的部份：「EC2 Price Reductions – Reserved Instances & M4 Instances」。
另外一般性的降價以 m4 為主：「Lower Prices for M4 Instances」，如果拿 t2.large 跟 m4.large 比較，us-west-2 (Oregon) 的價錢就很微妙了：
t2.large 2 Variable 8 EBS Only $0.094 per Hour m4.large 2 6.5 8 EBS Only $0.1 per Hour
如果是 ap-northeast-1 (Tokyo) 的話是：
t2.large 2 Variable 8 EBS Only $0.128 per Hour m4.large 2 6.5 8 EBS Only $0.129 per Hour
雖然 AWS 官方的說法是這樣 (取自「AWS t2 burst mode ECU equivalence」)，表示 t2 系列有他特別可以應用的地方，但還是有哪邊覺得很微妙...：
Amazon EC2 的 m4 系列推出更大台的機器，m4.16xlarge：「Expanding the M4 Instance Type – New M4.16xlarge」。
先前 m4 最大的是是 m4.10xlarge，現在則是往上拉... 比較特別的是這款機器可以吃到 20Gbps (跟之前出的 x1.32xlarge 相同)，更早推出的 m4.10xlarge，以及 {c4,c3,g2,r3,i2,d2}.8xlarge 都只能吃到 10Gbps。
選擇會更活一點... 不過到這個等級的應用應該都規劃過 scale 架構才對？雖然也是有可能有那種買來的 application 啦...
應該是各項成本的降低的順勢降價，幅度約 5%：「Happy New Year – EC2 Price Reduction (C4, M4, and R3 Instances)」。
C4 與 R3 是針對 CPU 與記憶體，M4 則是一般性的 instance，都是最新的系列。看起來是累積到過年後發一篇用的？價錢馬上生效，同時 On-Demand 的部份回朔到月初：
Changes to the On-Demand and Dedicated host pricing are retroactive to the beginning of the month (January 1, 2016); the new Reserved instance pricing is in effect today. During the month, your billing estimates may not reflect the reduced prices. They will be reflected in the statement at the end of the month.
接下來應該是陸陸續續恢復正常上班...
Amazon EC2 推出新的一般性機種 m4.* 了：「The New M4 Instance Type (Bonus: Price Reduction on M3 & C4)」。
亮眼在 m4.10xlarge 這組可以控制 C-state 與 P-state，可以利用這兩個對 latency 與整體 performance 調整。
拿 m4.large 與 m3.large 比較，m4 便宜一些，而且 m4 記憶體比 m3 大一點，但是 m3 有內掛 SSD，m4 需要 EBS。如果 I/O 比較重的應用還是用 m3 還是比較好。
另外一個發表的是 m3.* 在某些地區有些微的降價 (約 5%)，就當作撿到的...？
