CloudFront 支援 TLS 1.3

看到 AWS 的公告,宣佈 CloudFront 支援 TLS 1.3:「Amazon CloudFront announces support for TLSv1.3 for viewer connections」。

預設會自動啟用:

TLSv1.3 is available today and enabled by default across all Amazon CloudFront security policies options. No additional changes are required to your CloudFront configuration to benefit from the security and performance improvements of TLSv1.3 for your viewer connections.

對使用者最大的差異應該還是改善 first byte 的時間 (主要是因為 handshake 時間縮短),這點 AWS 的人也有提到在內部測試時,美國區的改善情況:

In our own internal tests in the US region as an example, first byte latency for new negotiated connections saw reductions of up to 33% for TLSv1.3 compared to previous versions of TLS.

在 latency 更高的地區應該也會有大幅改善...

AWS Global Accelerator 的 TCP 協定

AWS Global Accelerator 是讓使用者先連到最近的 AWS 節點,再透過 AWS 的骨幹網路連到服務上 (可以參考之前寫的「AWS 推出 Global Accelerator,用 AWS 的網路加速」這篇),當時就有說支援 TCP 與 UDP,但剛剛看到「AWS Global Accelerator launches TCP Termination at the Edge」這篇的時候才注意到,本來的產品是把 TCP 封包當作 UDP 在處理,也就是 TCP 3-way handshake 還是要到服務節點本身處理。

現在這個 TCP Termination 的功能則是先在最近的節點上建立 TCP 連線,然後同時往後端的建立連線接起來:

Typically, a TCP connection is established by using a three-way handshake (that is, three messages) between the client on the internet and the application endpoint in the AWS Region. So the farther away the client is from the endpoint, the longer the initial connection setup takes. With TCP termination at the edge, Global Accelerator reduces initial setup time by establishing a TCP connection between the client and the AWS edge location closest to the client. At nearly the same time, Global Accelerator creates a second TCP connection between the edge location and the application endpoint in the AWS Region. With this process, the client gets a faster response from the Global Accelerator edge location, and the connection from the edge location to the application endpoint in the Region is optimized to run over the AWS global network.

這樣連線的速度就會更快,但有可能會有前面建起來但後面建不起來的情況需要處理,一般的應用程式應該還好,畢竟地球上有個 GFW 也常幹這種事情...

TLS 1.3 進入 Proposed Standard

最近蠻熱的一個新聞,TLS 1.3 的 draft-ietf-tls-tls13-28.txt 進入 Proposed Standard 了 (在「draft-ietf-tls-tls13-28 - The Transport Layer Security (TLS) Protocol Version 1.3」這邊可以看到歷史記錄):「Protocol Action: 'The Transport Layer Security (TLS) Protocol Version 1.3' to Proposed Standard (draft-ietf-tls-tls13-28.txt)」。

沒意外的話這就會是最終版本了。如果要看 TLS 1.2 與 TLS 1.3 的差異,看維基百科上的 Transport Layer Security - TLS 1.3 會比較清楚。

大家等很久了... 像是 OpenSSL 1.1.1 其實一部分也是在等 TLS 1.3 正式推出:(出自「Using TLS1.3 With OpenSSL」)

OpenSSL 1.1.1 will not be released until (at least) TLSv1.3 is finalised. In the meantime the OpenSSL git master branch contains our development TLSv1.3 code which can be used for testing purposes (i.e. it is not for production use).

主要還是期待非 NSA 派系的 cipher (其實幾乎都是 djb 的戰果) 與 1-RTT handshake,後續等 TLS 1.3 變成 Standard Track 應該就會被各家瀏覽器開預設值了...

nginx 的 TCP Fast Open

在「Enabling TCP Fast Open for NGINX on CentOS 7」這邊看到 nginxTCP Fast Open (TFO,RFC 7413) 的支援早在 1.5.8 就有了,而 Linux Kernel 也是 3.7 之後就全面支援了。

TCP Fast Open 利用第一次連線後產生的 TCP cookie,在第二次連線時可以在 3-way handshake 的過程就開始傳輸,藉此大幅降低 latency。

設定方法不難,先在 kernel 設定 net.ipv4.tcp_fastopen=3,再加上 fastopen=number 就可以了,像是這樣:

listen 80 fastopen=256

不過目前 NGINX Mainline 上的版本好像沒有編進去,暫時沒辦法測...
