Google Chrome 的 Headless 模式與 PhantomJS 的歷史

瀏覽器的 headless 模式讓開發者可以透過 command line 或是 API 界面操作,對於自動化開發測試很有用。而 Google Chrome 將在 59 版 (目前 57 版) 引入 headless 模式:「Headless mode」。

Headless mode allows running Chromium in a headless/server environment. Expected use cases include loading web pages, extracting metadata (e.g., the DOM) and generating bitmaps from page contents -- using all the modern web platform features provided by Chromium and Blink.

To use headless, start Chrome with a command line flag:

$ chrome --headless --remote-debugging-port=9222

PhantomJS 則是因為 Google Chrome 決定要支援 headless 模式,主要的貢獻者 Vitaly Slobodin (參考 Contributors to ariya/phantomjs 這邊) 決定退出維護:「[Announcement] Stepping down as maintainer」。


Oracle 官方的 InnoDB Cluster 出 GA 了...

Oracle 推出的 InnoDB Cluster 進入 GA 了,不過先觀望看看就好:「MySQL InnoDB Cluster GA is Available Now!」。

The GA release of InnoDB Cluster builds upon the great work that the MySQL Development Team has done on Group Replication, filling out the rest of the stack for setup, management, orchestration, and client routing.

算是 Galara Cluster 的競爭對手 (被 PerconaMariaDB 採用),產品成熟度還得再看如何...

Google 與 Facebook 都在建立消息驗證系統

Google 的在「Fact Check now available in Google Search and News around the world」這,Facebook 的在「Working to Stop Misinformation and False News」這。

Google 是針對搜尋與新聞的部份給出建議,透過第三方的網站確認,像是這樣:


For publishers to be included in this feature, they must be using the ClaimReview markup on the specific pages where they fact check public statements (documentation here), or they can use the Share the Facts widget developed by the Duke University Reporters Lab and Jigsaw.


Only publishers that are algorithmically determined to be an authoritative source of information will qualify for inclusion.

而 Facebook 是針對 Timeline 上的新聞判斷,但是是透過與 Facebook 合作的 partner 判斷,而且會針對判斷為假的消息降低出現的機率:

We’ve started a program to work with independent third-party fact-checking organizations. We’ll use the reports from our community, along with other signals, to send stories to these organizations. If the fact-checking organizations identify a story as false, it will get flagged as disputed and there will be a link to a corresponding article explaining why. Stories that have been disputed also appear lower in News Feed.

我不是很喜歡 Facebook 的方法,變相的在控制言論自由 (不過也不是第一天了)。


在「Incredible low-light camera turns night into day」這邊看到這個示範影片:

AlphaGo 又要重出江湖了

DeepMind 家的 AlphaGo 又要重出江湖了:「Exploring the mysteries of Go with AlphaGo and China's top players」。這次將會跟中國的頂尖職業棋手對弈,裡面提到三種賽制:

The summit will feature a variety of game formats involving AlphaGo and top Chinese players, specifically designed to explore the mysteries of the game together. The games will include:

  • “Pair Go” — A game where one Chinese pro will play against another...except they will both have their own AlphaGo teammate, alternating moves, to take the concept of ‘learning together’ quite literally.
  • “Team Go” — A game between AlphaGo and a five-player team consisting of China’s top pro players, working together to test AlphaGo’s creativity and adaptability to their combined style.
  • “Ke Jie vs AlphaGo” — Of course, the centerpiece of the event will be a classic 1:1 match of three games between AlphaGo and the world’s number one player, Ke Jie, to push AlphaGo to (...perhaps beyond!) its limits.

有傳言是這樣打 (目前大家都抄來抄去...),但目前還沒看到正式的公告:

(一)5月23,25,27日 柯潔與AlphaGo三番棋:每方3小時,5次1分鐘讀秒;
(二)5月26日 時越、羋昱廷、唐韋星、陳耀燁和周睿羊5人團隊賽:每方2小時30分,保留3次1分鐘讀秒;
(三)5月26日 古力、連笑人機配對賽:每方1小時,1次1分鐘讀秒。

另外有一篇「Innovations of AlphaGo」講了不少年初 AlphaGo 連勝六十盤的對局給人類棋手的啟發。

在教育領域用 KPI 制度的結果

這邊提到在教育領域所設計的制度所期望帶來的效果,與實際帶來的效果的差異:「Every attempt to manage academia makes it worse」。

出自「Academic Research in the 21st Century: Maintaining Scientific Integrity in a Climate of Perverse Incentives and Hypercompetition」這篇論文。

這邊左邊的 Incentive 都是可被量化的方式,而中間有預期的效果,右邊則是實際發生的效果。跟台灣校園裡看到的情況很接近。

可以看出來,你對用腦吃飯的人設計 KPI 制度,大概都是這樣的下場 XDDD


去年麻州立法禁止雇主詢問前工作的薪資 (參考「麻州立法禁止詢問前一份工作的薪資」),而紐約市也要加入這個行列了:「New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about their past salary」。

New York City joined Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, and Philadelphia in banning employers from asking job applicants about their pay at current or past jobs after the city council passed the measure in a vote on Wednesday.

Amazon Redshift 壓縮率的改善

Amazon Redshift 對壓縮率的改善:「Data Compression Improvements in Amazon Redshift Bring Compression Ratios Up to 4x」。

首先是引入了 Zstandard

First, we added support for the Zstandard compression algorithm, which offers a good balance between a high compression ratio and speed in build 1.0.1172. When applied to raw data in the standard TPC-DS, 3 TB benchmark, Zstandard achieves 65% reduction in disk space. Zstandard is broadly applicable.


Second, we’ve improved the automation of compression on tables created by the CREATE TABLE AS, CREATE TABLE or ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN commands. Starting with Build 1.0.1161, Amazon Redshift automatically chooses a default compression for the columns created by those commands. Automated compression happens when we estimate that we can reduce disk space without degrading query performance. Our customers have seen up to 40% reduction in disk space.


Third, we’ve been optimizing our internal on-disk data structures. Our preview customers averaged a 7% reduction in disk space usage with this improvement. This feature is delivered starting with Build 1.0.1271.


Finally, we have enhanced the ANALYZE COMPRESSION command to estimate disk space reduction.

不過其他幾個產品線的使用方式更成熟 (像是 Amazon Athena 這類產品),不知道會不會讓 Amazon Redshift 慢慢退出第一線...

ALB (Application Load Balancer) 支援對 Host 的分流了

大概是有時候 cluster 太小,ELB 或是 ALB 的費用反而比 cluster 還貴,再加上 ALB 提供起來算方便,所以就推出這樣的功能了:「New – Host-Based Routing Support for AWS Application Load Balancers」。

現在可以針對 Host 欄位決定導到不同的 cluster 上了:

然後讓 ALB 可以設的 rule 數量增加:

As part of today’s launch we are raising the maximum number of rules per Application Load Balancer from 10 to 75, and also introducing a new rule editor.

這個功能有種微妙的感覺 XDDD
